If you’ve already checked out our About Us page, you will know that we are at the very beginning of our journey, so all information on this page is forward looking (but also deeply ingrained in our DNA and the reason laterPlane was founded).

For your travels, for the planet

We started laterPlane with a mission, rather than a product: to create ways for all of us to continue to explore the world, while also protecting our planet. We are therefore committed to donating 20% of our proceeds to Organizations, projects and causes that work towards the betterment of the beautiful planet we call home.

Our mission to build an Earth-positive business means exactly this: to give back to the planet more than we take. When it comes to travel, this philosophy is grounded in a commitment to recognize the negative impact the travel industry has on our earth, but work towards solutions that counter balance this issue. People will always travel, so let’s re-imagine it in a more sustainable way!

Greener Travel = Greener Earth

The scientific evidence is clear: human activity is causing the planet to warm at an alarming rate, impacting the availability of fresh water, food security, and energy. But climate action helps push things in a more positive direction—reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and strengthening the planet’s resilience and adaptability to climate-induced impacts.

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, 8-10% of global CO2 emissions are caused by the travel and tourism sector. The majority of such emissions are caused by travel to and from a destination. And needless to say, the longer the route, the more CO2 is emitted.

Whether it’s by bus, train, plane, ship or car, every means of transport needs to be powered somehow, and this requires energy, which is typically generated by fossil sources such as oil and gas. When fuel is burned, as in the case of the most cars, and airplanes— which are fueled by kerosene — climate-damaging carbon dioxide is released. This enters the atmosphere and heats it up. The transportation sector is one of the major contributors to man-made climate change.

We hope that our earth-first approach to the travel sector has a significant, positive impact on the health of our planet. To do so, we dedicate a portion of our proceeds to support environmental solutions. For every dollar that we make (you can learn more about our business model and how we earn money without you paying us), 20% is immediately set aside to be donated to one of our amazing partners.

We’ve chosen One Tree Planted as our primary conservation partner and are humbled to be able to support their reforestation project as part of our commitment to environmental responsibility.

About One Tree Planted

One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Their six pillars of reforestation include benefitting air, water, biodiversity, social impact, health, and climate. The organization plants trees with local communities to rebuild forests after fires and floods, provide jobs for social impact, and restore habitats. To date they have planted over 20 million trees in 43 countries.

Trees and Deforestation

Trees play an important role in the water cycle, grounding the water in their roots and releasing it into the atmosphere. Here are some interesting facts about trees and the impact of deforestation around the world:

• Up to 48lbs. of CO2 is sequestered by a mature tree every year.

• 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods.

• 80,000 acres of forests disappear from the Earth every day!

• 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the result of deforestation.

• 28,000 species are expected to become extinct by the next 25 years due to deforestation.

• Deforestation comes in many forms, including fires, clear-cutting for agriculture, ranching and development, unsustainable logging for timber, and degradation due to climate change.

Future Plans and Initiatives

We kicked off our journey by building a basic travel aggregator and news site that gives back to the planet. That’s just step one. We’re on a big, long-term mission to clean up the travel industry.

Partnering with One Tree Plantee is just the first step, but soon we’ll add additional partners to our roster, organizations that share our earth-first mission.

We are also working on becoming carbon neutral/negative, obtaining Climate Neutral and B-Corp certifications and continue to explore ways to become the most sustainable travel brand.

Join us on our journey!
